Pixel barbies or pixel drag?

I was listening to NPR in the car the other day (It's one of the stations I listen to when I don't like the song on C89, or they are playing a commercial on KNBQ)

Anyway, as I was saying.. I was listening to NPR the other day and heard part of a story about POP music stars that perform in outrageous costumes. And It stuck me. A lot of Second Life players are doing just that: performing in drag. Only our drag is pixelated.

The scars are healing..

At least the physical ones. Emotionally I'm still adrift.

Those who've followed this blog know all about the gall bladder surgery from 2009. Well I took a close look at my belly the other day and was glad to see that the scar has healed pretty good (It's from 2 years ago.. I shouldn't be surprised).

BTW, that picture up above is a first. It's the first RL photo of me to appear on this blog. (The JCGoneWild blog had pix of me that weren't identified as such.. heh ;)) You can still subscribe to that blog if you ask me nicely. (I took it private in order to make it naughtier)

But while the physical scars from a couple years ago are almost gone the emotional scars from being dumped in November haven't. (And as an aside.. where did my abs go and where did this belly fur come from?)

Combined with other shifts in my life.. needing to move.. a fast burn of all the money I have saved up.. learning my step mom has ALS.. and my never ending quest for a decent job.. I think I'm doing good to be doing as well as I am. But this level of chaos is taxing.

That's why I thought I'd write this post.. to ask for advice.

I'm curious how others have dealt with major upheavals in their lives? What kept them grounded? Kept them focused?

And what I really got to know: Is there any way to mend a broken heart?

I live in interesting times

I decided when I started this blog that I would be truthful.. but not identifiable. That lies of omission where permissible.. but those of commission where not. (except within the framework of identity shielding) With that framework in place I could talk about pretty much anything.

In RL I'm a serious guy with a playful center. In SL I'm a playful guy with a serious center.

Jordyn allowed me to express my love of life.. the sincere love of meeting and getting to know people.. that for a variety of reasons I don't express in RL. It's allowed me to make friends with people that I probably wouldn't have in RL.

For those that like to psychoanalyze: In RL I had been so focused for so long on my roles in relation to other people that the ability to play was lost to me. I cut myself off from a childhood by being a surrogate parent because my parents were too busy fighting. When I found the love of my life I cut myself off from family and friends to focus my love on the needs of the one I love. And when I did that.. to some degree.. I cut myself off from myself. This denial of self has been especially strong recently as I've been desperately looking for work. (BTW found some seasonal employment.. which is a start.)

In the last couple weeks my life has taken a wholly unexpected turn. I am being dumped.

Surprisingly I'm dealing with this pretty well.

Job search is still priority number one. I've opened up my job search from Seattle area to anywhere in the globe where they speak English (at least well enough that I can get along.)

I've started to see a counselor to rethink who I am outside a relationship. (I've been told I actually have a pretty good grip on things. I guess It really helps to have an outsiders perspective on ourselves.)

For reasons I may share in some future post I have reduced my Second Life account to a "free account" and I am staying far away.

And the playful me I'm introducing to old and new friends in the real world.

We'll see what life has in store.

With this post I'm indicating, obviously, that I'm alive.. But I'm also declaring a timeout.

Time is a zero sum item. Any time you're spending time on one thing you aren't spending it on something else.. There's only so many things you can do before you've diced yourself too thin to be effective.

I've been realizing more and more that I just can't maintain this blog like I think a blog should be maintained.. I think maybe that's a conclusion many other bloggers I follow must have come to as well.

I've decided that If I work on anything blog-like, it needs to be on one of my RL ones.. That those blogs are important to demonstrating that I have a brain, skills, and attitude that will potentially help me getting better work.

(I've been kicking the bushes very hard the last 4 months and finally it paid off in the form of a job.. It's a part-time job.. It's a start, but I need more.. Another reason why I have less time.)

I'll leave the blog open as an archive.. and maybe every now and then I will write something.. But for the time being it is effectively closed.

Cracked open my Google Reader..

And have discovered quite a few of the blogs I used to read have disappeared. Gone. Off into the mists. Nothing there. (You get the idea.)

While on the one hand that's a reminder that I can't expect to keep up with other people strictly through their blogs.. I need to log in and say "Hi", or fire up the email, or in some cases the phone.

On the other hand it shows how thinly I've let some connections get.

In RL I've got relatives that don't know anything that's going on for me except for the annual xmas newsletter.. when I manage to get one out. I've put off returning some family calls.. for years.

Rather than kick myself.. at least too much.. I'm forgiving myself. I've been swamped trying to build out a professional network, applying for jobs, just trying to keep things going. And rather than making some kind of grand pledge to do things different going forward.. I'll just try to reach out and say "Hi" when I can.. and hope people are understanding and say "hi" back.

Actually Jakes is just the latest incarnation of the place that shows up time and again (online and everywhere). This is a place we gather to share a bit of who we are.. to be funnier than we are.. to laugh (if sometimes only "LOL" or "ROFL") to dance funny, to flirt.

At Jake's I hosted, took photos, flirted, fucked, blogged, and had fun.

With the closure of Jake's on Second Life one more "home away from home" closes. And soon.. I'm sure.. another one will take it's place.

Because we all need that fairytale to continue.

How I write blog posts.. (Blogger secrets )

How does one come up with blog content on a regular basis?

For me it depends on the purpose of the blog.. If the purpose is to entertain myself and my friends (like with Midcourt here) I seem to just have ideas "come to me"..

I fall across things when I look at other people's blogs.. when I'm just bouncing around.. watching youtube.. or whatever.

Sometimes I do a search and see what other ideas are out there (then I can chose to either add to the discussion or simply "point" to someone else's content because they're better.. or funnier.. or whatever.)

No matter what.. I'm always trying to write as little as I can get away with.

"Get 'em in, drop something on 'em, let 'em go" is my blogging philosophy.

I have a slightly different methodology for some of my other blogging.

For professional blogging I read a lot of other blogs, journals, and books. As well as view presentations that cover the same topic areas I'm interested in. And then I write headlines for the topics I think I can contribute ideas on. (I seem to only post about a quarter of the posts I start.) I'm always double checking: is the post relevant to my blogs target audience, does it fit with my online branding, am I being interesting?

Later.. when I get some time to write.. I open up the posts I've written headlines for and just start to write.. I keep everything in draft form until I think I got it ready to post.. And when I think It's done.. I schedule it to drop a week or a month out.. so I have time to rethink posting it.. if I remember it's there.

Seattle is situated over a dozen or so fault lines (a number I pulled from my ass, don't quote it.. just know there's a lot of fault lines) AND the largest volcano in North America.. Mt. Rainier.

It was 30 years ago this last May St. Helens blew taking off the top half of that volcano and turning miles of forest into a moonscape.. filing a lake with tens of thousands of blown down trees.. knocking out bridges.. and closing roads and a freeway.

And supposedly we're "overdue" for earthquake on a "9" level. (which as I understand it is huge).. anyway.. If you see it in the news.. you know where I'll be.. apparently busy throwing bricks through the mini-mart window.

Marketing the Musician in Second Life..

Craig Lyons Writer (Craig Lyons in RL) is a very talented musician who has made Second Life an extension of his career.. an alternate channel for distributing his music and reaching an audience. Clearly not a central to his marketing strategy.. but a very nice extension strategy that seeds a global audience.

Musicians don't really think of themselves as marketers.. But each time they find another audience cluster what they've done is find another distribution "channel" and promotion tool. These channels might include clubs and events to regularly appear at.. record stores (they do exist, I've seen them) to feature them.. and Radio stations to help them develop a fan base.

Developing and expanding channels is what a product marketer does when it tries to get a retailer to carry it's products.. to carry more of it's products.. tries to get that retailer to feature and push that product.

Getting people to prefer you is simply another way to say they are a "fan".

Had a hot date the other day and thought I'd share some details..

Probably not the ones you want to hear about.. but they are the juiciest ones.

Went out to Lunchbox Laboratory in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood (technically just North of what locals consider to be Ballard) and had one of these (not my picture).. This is the "Truffle Love" burger a 1/2 pound of of grassfed beef, caramelized onions, bacon, swiss cheese, and truffle mayo. Shared one of these and a shake.. then went back to my place and went to bed. And slept. Then after a good five hour nap we got up and.. and.. that's why I have more than one blog.

A great video made by Freeta Kayo about Vitolo Rossini's story of personal growth through the virtual world of Second Life. Vito's story of waking from a 3 month coma and learning to rebuild life is an inspiring one of how living online CAN be a tool for improving your life.

Vito has been helping himself and others grow and learn by focusing on what he loves.. and sharing who he is.

The metaphor of the ripple in the pond came back to me while thinking about Vito.. No matter what you do in life.. no matter who you are.. or were.. You'll never see the full impact of what you have brought to other people. You may think you have no impact. But that's highly unlikely.

Live your life the best you can.. try to bring your best to other people.. try to be authentic.. learn.. grow.. love. Be "Real"

Was trying to think of a quick post.. then thought of this.

Went shopping a couple weeks ago and bought some new jeans.. I'm not a fan or fashion guy. Either in RL or SL. You probably already know that. (the joke is it's a form of ugliness so vile it must be changed ever six months)

This is probably as close as I have to a uniform. A lot of my jean I wear until I could get arrested in public. So It was time to get something new. And I HATE a lot of the jeans being sold now. (Man was not meant to have pocket flaps on his ass)

Second Life Calendar Project: Mr. October

I'm enjoying playing with this photoshop thing.. If I did it enough I might get good at it. Mr. October is someone I've chatted with forever on facebook, but only just by chance met in-world the other night. (In-world meaning Second Life for the uninitiated)

Anyway, where we met and how he was dressed made him PERFECT to be my guy for October. So, this desktop background is ready to go. Feel free to click on Teleny Macarthur and download the image for yourself. (Oh, he also has a blog: Modernly Medieval)

For the technically curious: This started with a very high resolution screen capture.. then in PS it was separated into 3 layers: 2 for the background, and one for Teleny himself. For the 2 background images.. one was slightly blurred and a top-to-bottom gradient mask applied.. then both received a color filter. For the third layer Teleny was carefully cut out with the pen tool and masked.. then received his own adjustment layer so I could play around a bit with the layers setting. A shadow was created.. blurred.. and wrapped across the wall behind Teleny. And a dark gradient was also draped from left to right to heighten the dungeon feel. Lastly all the text stuff was put in place. I count nine layers in the finished file.

(You've probably noticed.. I call pretty much everything fun)

Got the chance to spend a few hours in-world last night (Monday), that was fun. Sorry I didn't say "hi" to anyone. I'm still working at capturing video of Tidra for a little project. It's truly an amazing build. I have another nights worth of capturing and I think I'll have enough to start the editing process. (Franz has already created some videos .. so what I do will probably seem redundant.. but I want to do it anyway.)

I've been playing with adobe photoshop, premiere, and after effects and learning all kinds of interesting things about what these programs can do. It's been interesting to learn how I have barely been using these tools so far. The results are showing up in my Calendar Project.. and will be in my Tidra video.

Speaking of Photoshop.. my "Mr. October" is finished and ready to post on Sept. 17th.

I've been doing more social networking stuff in RL. Haven't been using my RL Facebook account much.. probably should. Linkedin has been fun tho.. it's allowing me to "go global" in the forums. I've already developed fans in India and Australia. Though it's here in Seattle that i really need the connections. Participating in the Linkedin forums has also pointed out to me that I need to re-orient my RL blogs subject matter.. to get more serious about what I (may) know something about. I've been shocked at what some people think is 1. the right way to treat other people. 2. what some people think is the correct answer to a professional question.

The face-to-face networking has been a little more difficult. most of the time it seems forced and artificial to me.. I'm at my best when I'm not trying to present "me" but just trying to learn about other people and their situations. Plus it really sucks up time. However, in retrospect, I think every bit of work I've ever gotten has been people seeking me out based on one of those kind of conversations. Or them referring me to someone based on liking me.. again, based on one of those kind of conversations. So it seems, I need to have more of those kind of conversations regardless of how much time they take up.

Going with the career coach has been useful, I have a much better presentation of who I am now than I did before. Sill concerned I may be presenting myself as more experienced than I should. But that might be the "imposter syndrome".

Don't know what more else to say. This is a 15 min post written at 1:40am after a 2 hr "try to take a nap but couldn't sleep". I'll give it another shot now....

It's been weeks since I've been on..

Been very busy lately learning things I should either have already known, or did already know but wasn't sure I knew, or relearning things I plainly forgot.

In the last two weeks I've:
Taken a career workshop series and hired a career coach.

Learned (relearned) how to network.

Made new and found old friends on Linkedin (now up to 66).

Attended networking events. (varying in size from <10 to over 400)

Given 5 presentations about personal branding. (It's just branding after all)

Provided branding advice for a business start-up.

Provided strategic marketing advice for another entrepreneur contemplating a start-up.

Provided general advice for an existing business contemplating a change of business model.

Delivered on a product-line development project I've been working on for months.

Participated in various online professional forums.

Kicked up my twittering (now following 150, being followed by 77, and on 7 lists)

Cleaning up around the house separating what is an "office" thing from what is a "rest of life" thing.

Sorting snail mail that I've let pile up.

(the email boxes have over 5,000 unread item and need a major sort)

Cleaned the tub (you should be sooo glad I didn't take and post pictures)

And gotten a overdue haircut.

Next..

This week I have at least three more events and a seminar to go to, the next round of work on several projects. I think next weekend I'll head out of town and take a little vacation. And you know what I'll probably do?

I'll probably spend the weekend in a hotel room logged into SL working on a project I started a couple weeks ago and I'm determined to finish.

Second Life Calendar Project Cont..

For September I thought I'd try a little experiment and see what I could do with a video captured image.. Of course it helps to have a good looking subject. Franziskus Ninetails provided both the model and the environment (I secretly shot him while I was filming Tirdra for a video I'm playing around with.. more to come on that.)

For the curious the image above was captured in Second Life using SnapzProX's movie option, then imported into PhotoshopCS3 where an individual frame was selected.. then THAT frame was placed into it's own Photoshop file where magical color manipulations, multiple gradients, masking, text additions, and manipulation produced the image you see above. (ultimately a 12 layer file)

The Quagmire Challenge..

Time for me to post my answer to the Quagmire challenge.. The blogging meme that looked like a lot of fun until I tried to actually do it. Anyway, here it is..

1. Your first post
This blog began December 4th 2007.. And I'd forgotten what my first post was. If it weren't for this challenge I wouldn't have looked (probably).

My first post was was literally a test of a test of a test.. it was a placement of my first youtube video.. which was itself a first test of a screen capture program. Checking as of this writing that little 57 second video has been viewed 9,644 times.

2. A post you enjoyed writing the most
This was a hard meme section to do since I don't really "write" much. I pretty much just introduce something and then point to it or embed it. My favorite posts are actually those when I can point so the great posts or great blogs of others. So I had to really struggle to find something I (1) actually wrote and (2) enjoyed writing. I added a third criteria, and that was that I really WANTED to write it. Let me explain.

A lot of my posts just fall out of me. I'm bouncing around the net and I come across something and "just decide" to drop it into a post. I then quickly write a paragraph to introduce it, I schedule it, and I move on.

But some posts get a little more thought.. that is to say I drop the idea into a post, maybe jot a note or two, but I don't schedule the post.. Later I come back and write something and schedule the post to drop.

ANYWAY.. The post I'll put as the one I enjoyed writing came about during the 2008 political season here in the US. With the presidency and a third of the senate and all of the house of representative up for election or re-election I felt compelled to express why I thought it was important to vote.

3. A post which had a great discussion
No matter what.. one topic always works: Sex Online

4. A post on someone else's blog that you wish you’d written
I've thought long and hard about this one. First I thought about seeing what I might have commented on using Google Buzz.. but that wasn't very comprehensive. Then I thought of just picking a post from each of the blogs I check each time I check my reader.. but that was too much. Then I thought of just picking a post from Q's blog since he started this meme.. but I couldn't decide on just one.

Ultimately I decided I follow toooooo many blogs to answer this one the way it deserves to be answered. A cop-out for sure.

5. Your most helpful post
This isn't false modesty.. but I'm not thinking this blog is particularly helpful.

What it is.. is the closest you will come to finding out who I am under the skin. Or more accurately the closest you'll find online. (In person I reveal more.. I think) My RL blogs are professional, my facefook and twitter posts are professional, pretty much all my online writing is crafted with a professional reputation in mind. Those other blog posts are designed to be helpful, explain ideas, be part of a larger conversation on topics I supposedly know something about. But they don't reveal much.

So while what you read here isn't the full story of who I am, it is an accurate story. Even if you have to read it between the lines.

6. A post with a title that you are proud of
It's a tie:
"Intellectual and Glenn Beck in the same sentence.." vs. "If you have been following my penis.." Though I'm not sure "proud" is the right word.

7. A post that you wish more people had read
Even though I have a couple analytic packages installed on this blog I don't pay much attention to which posts get viewed "too little". I pay attention to which posts get viewed "too much".

When I post something that gets more traffic than I'm used to getting I pay close attention to what the topic is, keywords for that post, where the traffic is coming from, the bounce rates, time on site, and the paths taken through the site.

I've discovered how easy it would be to create a high traffic Second Life blog with high Technorati authority and high Google page rank. However it would result in a blog not authentic and true to who I am. I am not a SLebrity. This blog is something to make Second life more interesting for me.. and in the process maybe more interesting for you.

Second Life love stories

Everyone loves hearing stories about "online love" and they lean even closer when you have a good story about "online sex".

Second Life is just one of the many places you can spend time online.. Some think of it as a 3D visual chatroom.. on steroids. But talk with the people that have spent enough time to get over the interface challenges and it's clearly more than that.

Second Life really is a "virtual world".

By having a genuine sense of "presence" and an ability to elaborately flesh out your avatar people can interact with some deep core of who you are.. or at least they can begin to. Time and conversation take things from there.

At each communication method a relationship has the opportunity shift around. Someone that is fascinating in IM may become less so in voice (especially if they eat while they talk.. but that may just be my thing). A great conversationalist in voice may not carry over in a in-person meeting when your physical presence is more.. um, present. Yet as difficult as the hurdles make it "one thing" quite often "leads to another".

Put another way.. relationships, like drama.. is inevitable wherever you put people together and let them spend time talking to each other. (If you don't have a Second life account click here.)

How secure is your online identity?

A little while back there was some controversy about 3rd party Second Life viewers.. People questioned their security and the motivations behind some of the developers.. but security issues go way beyond Second Life viewers.

Norton from Symantec has an interesting online survey that lets you calculate the value of your online identity. That is.. you do some guessing.. click a few radio buttons.. and learn two things: 1. what online criminals may calculate your value to be (should they wish to steal your identity and use if for themselves) and 2. what they'd sell it for if they chose to go that route.

It's sobering to look at.

The numbers show essentially what someone would be willing to pay to get at your info.. If you think you are ONLY worth a .00000002¢ bulk phishing email you are wrong.. the numbers I saw easily allow for creating sophisticated custom software to entice you to give up information "legitimately" through the front door.. which can then be sold out the back door.

Lesson: You are only as safe as the weakest site you visit.

What I do

Do you use the same password/ID combination across a number of sites?

I talked to a online security guy a while back and he recommended that at minimum I use a different password on every account. (a strong one for each one) He also recommended that I convert online security risk into physical security risk. To do that I bought one of those old-fashioned rolodex decks and write the information on the individual cards.

The Mac auto-fills ID and password information on entry forms, and the Rolodex provides a back-up. Combined I can use strong security codes and LOTS of them.

If you aren't doing something along these lines it's only a matter of time before you get hit.

Mad Men

I love "mad men".. it's a great show.. not entirely realistic about what advertising was like in the 60's (from what I've read anyway).. but close enough to give viewers liver problems and lung cancer.

May 13th 2008 I began a blog for what was then called Jake's Dance Club.. And at around the same time took up the role of being one of the club hosts.. And I had a hell of a good time..

A lot has happened in the two years since that start, including 186 blog posts.. But for more than a year we've been working on a transition and Rocky Constantine has been the main blogger for what is now called Jake's Club Resort..

Now that the club itself has moved to the Gay Archipelago and the grand re-opening party has happened it's also time for the blog to move.. so be sure to refresh your bookmarks and reader links with the new address..

What does "nothing to do" mean to you?

I'm sharing this largely un-edited (because I'm not much of an editor) and because I loved it just as it is.. Please enjoy

It started out as work/pleasure trip.

I had to fly from Singapore to Washington DC for a quarterly face to face meeting with my boss.

I had coupled that trip with a few, much deserved, days off before flying back over “the pond”. The idea of isolation, quiet, and “nothing to do” was something I was looking forward to.

A friend of mines’ family owns a beach house on he Carolina Outer Banks and assured me that we would have a great couple of days relaxing on the beach and soaking up the sun. The twelve bedroom, thirteen bath house would be ours for the whole weekend.

Not only did the house have a private walkout onto the beach, but had a pool, hot tub (a rather useless thing in the Carolina hot, muggy days), and prior to his parents leaving, they stocked the place with food, beer, and liqueur. They knew the likes and dislikes of their Marine son, and wanted to leave the place perfect for him and his Marine buddies.

What started out as a few guys hang’n together ended up with a contingent of six active duty Marines, including myself, two Navy seals on medical leave, and another Marine pending a medical discharge.

We left Washington on Friday afternoon, Rick picked me up from my last meeting near DuPont Circle. I figured we would be headed South on I 95 South, out of town. The rest of the guys were driving up from Camp Lejeune and were meeting us at the house. As we headed North on 355 I knew that something was up.

We pulled up to Bethesda Naval Hospital and Rick explained to me that we were going to take a couple of guys who were convalescing along with us. Selfishly, I thought, “there goes my relaxing weekend”. Forty-five minutes later we were on our way to North Carolina with two wounded Navy Seals, John and Skip, and a Marine Special Forces GSgt, Roger. John was on crutches and getting used to his new prosthetic leg from the knee down, Roger had both arms and hands bandaged up healing from burns and skin grafts, and Skip just needed time to heal from his fourth surgery to remove shrapnel from his back and abdomen. As the trip unfolded Rick and I heard the reasons for these guys being at Bethesda. Not to minimize their experiences, but Rick and I had heard or experienced ourselves similar stories from our several tours in Iraq. Being all Special Forces types we bonded instantly and our friendship was cemented almost immediately. The mark we would leave on the beaches of Duck, North Carolina, and the impression that our fellow “tourists” left on us will last forever.

We pulled into the driveway at 12:15AM. The two other cars in the driveway told us that the guys from Lejeune were already there. They came out and helped us get the other guys and our luggage into the house and had cold beer waiting for us and after a few slaps on the back and a few handshakes we had all come together as the “unit” as we came to name ourselves. We sat up till 5AM sharing stories and laughing our asses off and generally having a good time. The guys from Lejeune had all crashed and that left Rick and I to take care of the guys from Bethesda.

The nurses at Bethesda gave us the bandages and medications, with detailed instructions, for dressing changes. Rick had trouble doing much of anything. Without the use of his hands I ended up lending him my hands for the most personal of tasks. Skip was having a hard time sleeping, he lost his closest friend in the action that landed him in the hospital, and still had nightmares. John was pretty much self-sufficient, but occasionally needed help getting around.
We ended up sleeping till two in the afternoon.

Communities like Duck are tourist enclaves. Every Saturday the houses are emptied out and a new batch of “city” dwellers descend upon the town. We were staying in a nice area...all the houses were multi-million dollar edifices designed for large extended families. Most had five to 15 bedrooms and the living quarters were on the third or fourth floor with the bedrooms below. Ricks’ parents had one of the nicer ones as they live there year round and their home is more that “income property”. We were “keeping an eye” on the place while they were visiting friends in New York City.

I took the car into town. Replenished our supply of beer. Bought a bushel basket of fresh seafood (raw oysters, blue crab, lobster, scallops and all the fixings). I also bought a large Marine Corps flag which we ended up hanging on the side of house. Upon my return, we settled down to a fantastic meal, washed down with large quantities of beer. After laying around for a bit, we decided to go to the beach. A couple of coolers of beer, a football, and, of course, our flag.

From the looks we got, I figured we made a pretty good first impression.... a Half-dozen plus studly well-built Marines in bathing suits and our recuperating warrior buddies. We set up a few chairs, planted the flag and horse-play and beer was the what followed. At some point we sat there watching the sunset from the wrong coast, but the Eastern sky still looks pretty as the sun sat over our backs. Then it started.

An older couple walking along the beach, probably in their 70’s approached us, he asked me about the flag...if we were Marines. Affirmative. He broke into a smile, gave us a OHHH RAAH and introduced himself, as a Vietnam Vet who served in the Marine Corps in 1966 thru 1969. Soon, his wife gave us a “good night” as her husband sat with us, had a few beers, and “talked shop”. He hung with us till the stars came out and said “he felt like he just came home” being around us. We all shared stories of our endeavors...some good, some bad... and we all grew a little closer as our “unit” seemed to grow by one.

Rick and I were the “caretakers” of the wounded. Rick took care of Skips bandages and helped John with his leg, I gave Roger his baths and got him dressed.

The next day we hit the beach early. Although Ricks’ parents had a beachfront home, the beaches are still public....we staked out a rather large spot....set up the chairs, blankets, coolers, and of course, our flag. By noon the beach was packed, Skip, John, and Roger, were having a good time...hell we all were. I actually spent a few hours working on my tan, reading and kicking back. We were attracting attention. Girls were hanging around. Rick had to take the guys aside, and give them “the talk”. Then the couple from the night before approached us, asked us if we had any plans for dinner. I responded that we really had no plans at all.....he and his wife invited us for dinner. They had a smaller place and thought it might be a good idea if they just brought all the food over to our place...Rick gave her the keys to the kitchen. We all had the best crab cakes any of us had ever had and settled into a nice relaxing evening.

The next day it was back to the beach.

All during the next few days people would approach us, ask us about our service, thank us for our service and some would tell us stories about their years in the service or their kid that was “over there”.

On the third day a guy about my own Dads’ age came up. asked us what we did, where we’d been...he talked with Roger and me for about 30 minutes before he mentioned that his son had died in Iraq. I asked him his son’s unit and where it happened. Turned out I was there about two days after his son’s death during my second tour to Iraq. . He had a few beers with us and we talked for about two hours. There were tears and laughter and something more....healing. That is when it struck me...that these people coming up to us, sharing their stories of their sons, brothers and in one case her husband, were bonding with their loved ones through us. And for Roger, Skip and John it was a chance for these people to thank them for their sacrifices...it was a chance for them to heal as well. and somehow, someway, attach meaning to the price they paid.

As the end of the week approached we bought no more beer and very little food. Our “neighbors” provided us our meals.

One day I watched a group of several mom’s and their daughters approach us. They carried plastic containers with a huge lunch for us...we had never talked to these people before...they just came out of the woodwork, marching up the beach with their offerings. They said they just wanted to do something nice and tears welled up in the Mom’s eyes as she gave Roger a hug, laid down the food, and walked away.

I was reminded of mass, when the gifts were brought up to the alter.

One of those nights, we went into town. ALL of us. A dance club with live music and a bunch of horny woman. Mostly cougar types. And most of the guys got lucky that night and from the sounds emanating from the house that night...I’m sure the neighbors got an earful...and so will Ricks’ parents. The part that really put a smile on my face was the gal I brought home that night. She was a cute 25 year old. Down with a few friends from Maryland. After we finished our second romp, about 3AM she asked me about Roger. She was concerned that he didn't find anyone to bring home that night. That’s when I informed her that she could do me a really big favor.

An hour later she returned to bed and I showed her my gratitude once again for her gift to Roger.

The next day Roger was a new man, she could hardly walk, and everyone had a smile on their face.

Our last day was when I sorta looked back on my week of “relaxation”.

I had dutifully changed Rogers’ dressings twice a day, gave him a bath most days, and helped him get dressed and undressed everyday. One night I laid on the couch holding Skip like a baby while he tried to get through a tough nightmare and woke up all freaked out. I had listened to old vets tell their stories, and mom’s and sisters talk about their brothers and sons, and in one case hugged a father who cried at the memories of his boy lost in Iraq.

I had plenty of relaxation time as well. Hours in the baking sun, reading a novel under the shade of an umbrella, and “playing” with a bunch of the best guys I’ll ever know.

My week of relaxation turned into a week of reflection.

My quiet time turned into a time of bonding and camaraderie and caring. And I turned into a better Marine and a more understanding member of the human condition.

PS- We left the flag on Rick’s fathers’ house...hanging proudly as a marker..... ”the US Marine Corps has been here”

Inside every adult lurks a graduation speaker dying to get out, some world-weary pundit eager to pontificate on life to young people who'd rather be Rollerblading. Most of us, alas, will never be invited to sow our words of wisdom among an audience of caps and gowns, but there's no reason we can't entertain ourselves by composing a Guide to Life for Graduates.

I encourage anyone over 26 to try this and thank you for indulging my attempt.

Ladies and gentlemen of the class of '97:

Wear sunscreen.

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they've faded. But trust me, in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine.

Don't worry about the future. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blindside you at 4 p.m. on some idle Tuesday.

Do one thing every day that scares you.

Sing.

Don't be reckless with other people's hearts. Don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.

Floss.

Don't waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The race is long and, in the end, it's only with yourself.

Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.

Keep your old love letters. Throw away your old bank statements.

Stretch.

Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives. Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don't.

Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees. You'll miss them when they're gone.

Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll divorce at 40, maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance. So are everybody else's.

Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. It's the greatest instrument you'll ever own.

Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room.

Read the directions, even if you don't follow them.

Do not read beauty magazines. They will only make you feel ugly.

Get to know your parents. You never know when they'll be gone for good. Be nice to your siblings. They're your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.

Understand that friends come and go, but with a precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people who knew you when you were young.

Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard. Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft. Travel.

Accept certain inalienable truths: Prices will rise. Politicians will philander. You, too, will get old. And when you do, you'll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.

Respect your elders.

Don't expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund. Maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse. But you never know when either one might run out.

Don't mess too much with your hair or by the time you're 40 it will look 85.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

But trust me on the sunscreen.

Identity, behavior, searching, learning, are common themes in this blog (in between abundant filler) So this is perfect.. I found it on Phasing Grace.. Grace is an always thoughtful blogger.. She's written many posts that I wish I had written. In fact it's uncanny how often her posts and mine share the same material (Sometimes on this blog and often with one of my RL ones) Here's a couple posts I think you'll enjoy: Why, Tipping Point.

This quote recently appeared in a post on her blog.. Grace thought it might best fit her personal "why story".. I may adopt it myself.

What kind of friends can you make in Second Life?

Short answer: All kinds.

Yesterday was a post about friendship.. Today is another one. This time I'm putting up a graphic from the book Rethinking Friendship: Hidden Solidarities Today

In the book they identify 8 different kinds of friendships.. Each can be made online.. But as I'm sure you all know.. none are guaranteed.

Associates were people who only shared a common activity, like a hobby or a sport.
Useful contacts were people who shared information and advice, typically related to work or advancing ones career.
Favor friends were people who helped each other out in a functional manner, but not in an emotional manner.
Fun friends were people who socialized together, but only for fun. They didn’t provide each other with a deep level of emotional support.
Helpmates were a combination of favor friends and fun friends. They socialized together and helped each other out in a functional manner.
Comforters were like helpmates, but they also provided emotional support.
Confidants disclosed personal information to each other, enjoyed each other’s company, but weren’t always in a position to offer practical help, for example if they lived far away.
Soulmates displayed all of the elements.

Saw that Franz had seen the twilight films.. And I have to admit, part of me is curious about them.

Even though it's supposedly set in/near Seattle.. I haven't seen them (though I know a couple vampires).. and I'm not sure I ever will. I only see about 3-4 movies a year and those have to be what I call "big screen movies".. Movies that NEED the big screen to tell their story. Otherwise I figure I can wait until they hit video or online or even TV.

One of my mottos: "Relationships matter".

I don't judge people.. or at least I try hard not to. So the poster below isn't a commandment, but rather a found image to draw your attention. I don't know how many times I've heard/read something similar. I don't agree with this idea, at least not completely.

Yes getting sucked "inside the box" can be dangerous. (I just re-read this and thought about re-writing it to remove the joke potential, but where's the fun in that?) But being disconnected from people is more dangerous.

The main content of this post is the talk by John Cacioppio below (36min) that explores loneliness and the bio-social value of relationships and companionship. I like this in the context of a Second Life blog. Second Life being a powerful alternate way to connect and/or stay connected to other people.

I always knew the power Second Life was in the connections, but it was interesting for me to think that the concept of "hyper-vigilance" provided by loneliness might be where "drama" comes from. And it was also interesting to me to hear how loneliness is actually needed by the society. Lonely people provide our humanity.

Still, loneliness isn't healthy for the individual. That's where Second Life comes in. In Second Life you can visit, play, share, lust for, love. Finding people people like yourself isn't that difficult (at least in the abstract, in the practical it can take some doing). It's not a perfect substitute for human connectedness, so be careful to maintain your real world relationships. But in my opinion it is a healthy addition.

Thought I'd play with the idea of desktop wallpapers.. Each month a new image, a new person, a new page of an artfully designed calendar. I've shot a July image (me at a lousy resolution - as a proof of concept) and an August (a much improved resolution of Jace Crazyboi) but need to shoot more pictures.. Maybe you? But first I want to know if this you like the pics and if you think this is an idea I ought to play with more..

* When the image has fully loaded in your web browser, right click on the image. A pop-up box will appear.
* Simply right-click the image, and, depending on your version of Windows, select Set as Background or Set as Wallpaper.
* DO NOT select "Set as Desktop Item...." This will not set the image as your wallpaper. It will set it as part of Microsoft's "Active Desktop" which will either overlap or show behind your wallpaper. You will pull your hair out trying to get rid of it.
* If you want to save the picture on your hard drive, right-click the image, click Save Picture As, rename the file whatever you like, and select a folder to store the image.

Yea, this is a long one.. and fat too.. (everyone loves a penis joke)

This is the last set of "Dedications of the Day" I'll be doing.. This post meme began at the end of November 2009, and I think has pretty much run it's course.. And judging by the number of comments (generally) I'm guessing it's a series that didn't have a lot of broad appeal.. But I enjoyed doing it anyway.

I always wanted to send out a dedication to each person who's made my Second Life interesting.. those who have shown me something interesting, entertained me, talked with me about themselves, or listened to me ramble about me.. And other than those conversations that disappeared (damn you LL) I think I pretty much have everyone.

These "Dedications of the Day" have been a kind of an extended party night and I hope you've liked them. And they have been fun for me to assemble for this stretch when I haven't been coming in world.

I want to make clear though, just because this is the last set doesn't make it the least important! (The overall order was kinda random after all.)

"JC Gone Wild" is closing..

Well.. in about 24 hrs "JC Gone Wild" will be closing to public view.. 457 posts after it started I have just put up it's final public post..

"JC Gone Wild" was always a blog in search of a mission (though not an audience.. globally it seems like it was visited by damn near everyone).. It could have been a name redacted version of my SL sex life for example.. That would have made for some interesting posts.

As it was.. it became a blend of real-life dreams, RL pix (yes my RL pics are there), borderline x-rated pix, and flirtation.. However I don't need to upkeep 2 SL blogs right now (I have 5 RL ones I try to keep up with) so something has to give..

I'm taking "JC Gone Wild" private for another reason..

Ya never know who's gonna figure out what. For example, pix of me taken on a summer vacation a few years ago have already shown up on the web before I put them up. Thankfully looks change over time and no pictures have been shared of me naked since my gallbladder scar showed up. Still I'm a bit of a control freak..

Management of reputation is THE essential skill of this century.. You can't control what others put up about you.. But you CAN control what you associate with your name. I may revive posting as a private diary, or gallery, or may just abandon it. If you are currently a follower I'm willing to add you as a private subscriber if you send me an email address.

I was kinda interested in physics in college, it was my lab science.. I got a "C".. Decided I wasn't the physicist type.. And not really the scientist type too.. It's no wonder I chose the relatively easy economics, finance, and marketing concentrations.. Still, I have always been interested in how everything works..

Richard Feynman is quite a famous physicist and lecturer.. Nobel prize winning even.. Here's an interview he did later in life.. and then if that sparks YOUR interest.. one of his older famous lectures.

Greenies Home closes its doors! :( We gonna celebrate the cute green aliens with many events and a 50% sale on everything in the shop. June 19 we continue 7-9am SLT with the fantastic goth metal / opera DJ Sincrea Slade in the record player "Club G" and starting 12pm SLT the DJs from Dark Refuge entertain you with dark industrial, EBM, gothic, rock and metal at the sink!! Its gonna be the day of evil Greenies like the space villian, the vampire or the devil!!!! muuah.

I've decided "JC Gone Wild" is going away..

It began at a 4th of July party in 2008 after a joke.. Marky Monentes suggested someone create a blog called "JC Gone Wild" so I flipped open the browser and did.. It's been interestingly popular.. drawing as many as 350 views a day.. now two years and some 35,000 views later I think it's time to take it offline.

I'll drop five more posts just because I prepped them already.. but on July 1 I'm going to close this blog to pubic view.

It may reopen to private subscription later in the year when I get more time. (Depending on demand)

What is Second Life?

The Machinema art form is a great one for the modern age, and there is no more flexible tool than Second Life for making a story come to life. You can build environments, animate actions, costume characters.. the list goes on and on.

Don't hate me because I weigh 162# and I'm in decent shape.. Or should I say pale but decent shape.. Hate me because I didn't do anything special to get this way.

I found out about ClubOne from a recent article talking about the success they've had helping people learn how to live healthier using Second Life related programs. I thought this sounds like an intriguing application for virtual worlds.

Here's the story.. Metaverse Tribune: Battling Obesity in Second Life

ClubOne exists in the real world.. Mostly California.. But the development of a product (in this case a program) and the promotion of it and promotion of themselves to potential RL members and RL investors pose an interesting marketing application of Second Life.

To visit the Sim it appears you have to sign up for the program first which Looks like it runs this July through October. Details here.
